About Figure 8 Island

About Figure 8 Island

Figure Eight Island lies just accross the Intracoastal Waterway on the Atlantic Ocean coast of North Carolina, just outside the city of Wilmington, NC (Pop. 100,000). By car, the island is eight miles north of the Wilmington city limits on Highway 17, a coastal highway extending from Norfolk to Jacksonville. Turning off Highway 17, travelers go less than two miles on a paved two-lane road and enter the island via a causeway bridge with a 24 hour guard assuring access only to residents and registered guests. There are no commercial establishments on Figure Eight Island, but Harris Teeter grocery stores, movies, shopping, fresh produce stands and restaurants are just minutes away on Highway 17.

While sharing the same natural beauty and unspoiled landscape of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Figure Eight Island is a much closer and more convenient 1½ hour flight from Atlanta or Washington, D. C., and 2½ from New York. It is a two hour drive from Raleigh, a three hour drive from Charlotte, six hour drive from Atlanta and eleven hours from New York.

Figure Eight Island is also a quick two hour drive from Camp Seagull and Camp Seafarer in Arapahoe, North Carolina, and makes a wonderful location for a vacation after dropping off or picking up campers.
